VP Candidate Bio – Tom Berns

Posted by | November 8, 2010 .

Tom Berns has been a member of the Ohio Valley for 24 years.  While Tom is from Kentucky, he was actually recruited to referee in Ohio
and join the OVBOA by Tom Ballaban, an OVBOA past-president.  Tom’s career in Ohio prospered as he achieved multiple trips to the state tournament in the early 90s.  His success led to a opportunity to serve as the assignor of both basketball and football for the Southern Buckeye Conference.  Since then he earned a few more trips to Columbus bringing his total to 6 state and 18 regional assignments in both boy’s and girls basketball.  Also of note, Tom is a previous Tehan-Smith award winner which is the Ohio Valley’s award for leadership and service to the association.

Tom has always tried to find ways to help the association.  His resume includes serving as an assistant instructor with Owen Donahue for the Ohio Valley new officials class and has filled in for just about every association sponsored class since.  He also has 2 stints on the
advisory board in the 90s.  But one of Tom’s proudest contributions to the association was staying the course along with several current
members in the late 90s when our association split and influenced the direction that led to our success today.  Prior to and since then, Tom has mentored many of our members and always encouraged participation in the association.  Since 1998, Tom has helped every year with the blue book including selling advertising.  It is estimated that Tom has helped raise almost $10,000 in advertising sales for the association over the years.

Tom’s goal for the association is to make sure every member gets something out of their membership and to continue our momentum towards becoming the best training program in the state.  In the latter half of his career, Tom hopes to give back one more time and would cherish the opportunity to serve in this capacity.
