OHIO VALLEY OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION – BASKETBALL

MINUTES OF THE BOARD

AUGUST 25, 2003

Members Present: Angelo Zolatas, Kim Webb, Eddie Gregory, Bill Smith, Mick Sharkey, Bob Hartman, Clint Bard, Terry Roy, Don Schneider, Bob Goe, Andy Larkins, Ray Vaughn, Mike Condon, Kirk Brinker, Bob Hill

Members Absent: Bobby Sagers, Jr., Tom Driggers, Terry Maxey, and Dan Bley

Meeting called to order by President Sharkey at 7:01 PM.

Minutes of the meeting of April 8, 2003 were read.  Motion by Webb to accept the minutes as written.  Passed unanimously.

Andy Larkins was introduced to the Board by Vaughn and asked to make a presentation on the development of the new Ohio Valley Officials web site.  Larkins described exactly how the web site would be developed and all the related costs involved.  The Board had many questions for Larkins and a lengthy discussion on the merits of having an association web site took place.  Motion by Webb to employ Larkins Company to develop the Ohio Valley Officials web site.  Passed unanimously.

Vaughn informed Board that the OHSAA is now requiring each association to appoint a “Training Coordinator” to be in charge of all new member education.  The board is under a short deadline to make this appointment and therefore members of the board were asked if they would be interested in this position.  Mick Sharkey and Bob Goe stepped forward and expressed interest in this position.  Sharkey and Goe presented a brief resume of their qualifications.  Motion by Hartman to appoint Sharkey as the association Training Coordinator for the 2003 – 2004 season.  Sharkey and Goe were asked to leave the room while the board voted on the motion.  The motion passed unanimously and Mick Sharkey was appointed the Training Coordinator.

Vaughn presented the highlights of the OHSAA Annual State Secretary’s Meeting.  Highlights of the meeting included the State’s new position on criminal offenses by officials.

Committee updates:

Nomination:  Hartman was presented with a list of Board members whose term will expire this year.

Blue Book:  Condon stated that advertisers were committed.  Vaughn is in the process of completing all the updates and the Blue Book should go to print in early September.  The goal of the association is to pass all the books out at the clinic to save postage.

Grievance:  Nothing to report.

Program:  Sharkey is in the process of setting up guest speakers and the program will be finalized in the next month.

Election:  Nothing to report.

Audit:  Nothing to report.

Entertainment:  Zolatas stated that he would poll the association for ideas and present some options at a later date.

Vaughn informed Board that the nomination of Bob Sagers, Sr. for the OHSAA Hall of Fame was timely submitted.

The Board reviewed a list of potential candidates for the Dan Tehan Award.  After reviewing the list the following motions were made:

Motion by Hartman to nominate Ray Vaughn, passed unanimously

Motion by Zolatas to nominate Bobby Sagers, Jr., passed unanimously

Motion by Sharkey to nominate Jon Sheehan, passed unanimously

Motion by Sharkey to nominate Mike Heizman, passed unanimously

Sharkey informed Board that the meeting site at Norwood High School has been confirmed. Sharkey also stated that the school has agreed to provide all the classrooms the association needs.

Bard presented new member class dates and list of potential instructors to the new Training Coordinator Sharkey.  Sharkey and Bard agreed to meet and discuss the format of the class.

New Business:  Smith informed Board of the new requirement by the schools to have officials list their date of birth on payment vouchers.  This requirement is sanctioned by the State.

Motion by Webb to Adjourn, passed unanimously at 9:20 PM.
